Default Yakan Barung

estates unlimited had a bunch of moro and indo weapons that went up for bid today on live auction. what got attention was the rare yakan barung that no one seems to care, well, except for punal.

good catch on that one bro, at a reasonable price at that. hope you post more clearer pictures when you get it.

What is so special about it? No negative connotations, just asking for a lesson. Why Yakan?

ariel,

it's just that yakan barungs are way harder to come by that, say, the tausug or samal type. also, a pleasant surprise (for me anyways) that no one bid on the pira, with a scabbard at that...

most likely from the same collector; the barung and pira.

What are the features of Yakan barong that distinguish it from, say, a Sulu one?

Smile

A different and smaller (shorter) punto and a different style of pommel perhaps ?
The pommel is very unlike the Sulu style as is this tagub but I am unsure whether the tagub is traditional Yakan style .

This is a beauty ; great score Punal !
I'd love to see a close up of the blade ; looks interesting .

on the auctioneer's pics, the handle looked as if it was loose from the blade. is it?

pretty small at that... only 14" blade; but 3/8" thick at the hilt.

No, it's a solid piece, no shake or rattle at all. The thing that puzzles me thought is its top, it's convertible/rag top down

punal

can you be more specific on what part of the barung is that opening? maybe a wide shot???

btw, that's a nice carabao horn/brass punto.

i should say, the top of the scabbard has at least 6" long X 1/4" wide openning, it's not a crack, it was intended that way.
