Silver yataghan: renovated???
Just ended.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1 I am somewhat uncomfortable with the "silverwork": seems quite crude, especially the "dolphin head", and the niello is far too pristine. The retaining plates have very "fresh" and crude edges too. What do we know about Syrian renovations of Yataghans? They are pretty active re-mastering silverwork for Kilijes and Shamshirs, but I have not seen "Damascus" ( )Yataghans yet. |

HI Ariel,
the scabbard looks right, but the hilt and forte look later and much cruder - I think a poor attempt at restoration. |

Hi Ariel and Jose, i had requested some pics to the seller of the whole thing and if i can post them (i haven't the permission of the seller) you will see a short and poor of grace yataghan.

I don't like thatone... Even if it is antique (I think it is) it was renovated at some age and I really do not like the overall look.

Yes, the work from the original artisans and that of the later one are horribly mismatched.

You are correct. Not many Yataghans are currently re-mastered in Damascus. However, there are some. And the silverwork of the one in question reminds me of the modern work. One point though - the only new silver scabbard starts at $500 and up. So, go figure:-) |
