Default Online museum collections

Hi all !

Has there ever been an attempt on this forum to compile every online museum collections containing vast or important ethnographic weapon collections ?

I personally use them a lot in my researches, and I think they are an extremely useful tool in our field.

However, I feel like they are underexploited, and that some are downright obscure and unknown from the general collector (I personally discover new ones every weeks). A thread where we compile them to help others in their research would thus be rather helpful in my opinion.

Hi Kubur,

Just trying to make our research endeavours easier

Thanks to everyone !

I didn't expect the thread to catch on so quickly and I fear I don't have much to contribute myself after such great suggestions !

I do recommend the Quai Branly (of course), huge collection, but the photographic archives are maybe even more interesting !

The British museum one is also very good with some rare pieces, and is surprisingly not talked about a lot.

The SMB database contains some rare weapons from Cameroon which might be useful to people studying the area.

I will add this portal (German) : https://kulturerbe.niedersachsen.de/start/

The Peabody Museum collections : https://pmem.unix.fas.harvard.edu:8443/peabody/

The American Museum of Natural History (very clear website with a lot of interesting pieces !) : https://anthro.amnh.org/collections

The Welt Museum Wien : https://www.weltmuseumwien.at/en/onlinecollection/

If I think of (or find) more I will add them !

Online weapons collections that I use.

The Royal Armouries - a very broad collection including ethnographic weapons.

https://collections.royalarmouries.org/#/objects

The Royal Collection - primarily European, but with a very fine collection of Indian arms and armour.

https://www.rct.uk/collection/search#/page/1

The phenomenal Wallace Collection - both European and Oriental/Asian collections.

https://wallacelive.wallacecollectio...unction=search

The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna - seems primarily to have the European weapons digitally catalogued, though the collection has a fair selection of high quality Indo-Persian items.

https://www.khm.at/en/visit/collecti...-masterpieces/

The V&A Museum - unhelpfully a lot of the collection is not yet photographed, but the items are described in detail, and you can request pictures of anything of interest.

https://collections.vam.ac.uk/search...ffset=0&slug=0

The Ashmolean Museum Oxford - search by terms. A broad mix of items.

https://collections.ashmolean.org/co...sort_order/asc

National Museum of Korea - search by terms. Primarily Korean weaponry.

https://www.museum.go.kr/site/eng/relic/search/list

The State Hermitage Museum - a mixed collection of high quality European and Indo-Persian items, with a scattering of ethnographic pieces.

Of course the amazing Metropolitan Museum collection.

Not ethnographic, but perhaps still of interest - the UK National Army Museum.
