High luk numbered Javanese kerises
Greetings,
it seems there are not so many high luk numbered Javanese kerises out there considering their scarce portrayal here. So, in order to... 1) educate myself further on the Javanese keris and 2) allow myself enjoy a bit of scarce keris eye candy ...please lets see them high luk Javanese kerises and hear what you know about them What is a high luk number? Well, I guess that is arguable but lets start conservatively with above 13 luk please. Thanks, J. |

Hello,
I posted a photo of my Keris before, and the feedback was it was a modern creation rather than from Majapahit era. I have new pictures that may be less blurry, is the consenus still the same? I do have a question, is the quality very good despite being modern, because the detail of this "puthut kembar" seems well detailed but that is my novice opinon.. In any case, this has 17 Luk by my count. Thanks for your time, comments, & opinons! apolaki |

In Java, krisses with 15 luk or more are called Kalawija and are made for people with special personal features only. Attached is the picture of one of my krises with 27 luk (dapur Kalabendu) Best regards Jean |

I have heard a number of ideas in respect of the number of luk in a Javanese blade, however, everything that I have heard falls into the category of personal and unsupported "good ideas", I cannot even call these ideas "theories".
I have not encountered anything in respect of luk numbers that I would consider to be authoratative, with the exception of the well known "more than 13" belief. This includes verbal information and information in print. There is a theory under development that may eventually give an acceptable and believable explanation for luk numbers, however this is not yet ready for discussion. |
