Thick Ganja keris
Hi,
it has been a while since my last post. attached is my latest purchase of keris. the lenght of the blade is 34 cm. the lenght of the pesi is 6.5 cm. the blade is normal thickness, tends to thin parts rather than thick part. the tantingan is quite heavy. there are some corrosion in some parts of the edges. is it possible to estimate this keris as Jenggala? i read in some keris book. the say one of the characteristic from Jenggala keris is thick ganja. i know we can not make the conclusion based only one characteristic. Feel free if you want to share your opinion. thank you, best regards, Joe |

No, it is not Jenggolo, but this thick gonjo is an indicator of a better than usual keris.
A Jenggolo keris usually has no steel core, the iron is without grain, it is very black and very padat, the top of the gonjo has a slight curve, blumbangan boto adeg, no vein. There are a number of other indicators, but this is sufficient to disallow this keris as Jenggolo. I think most people would give it as Tuban, or at least North Coast, but all the same, its a pretty nice keris. A thick gonjo like this is usually taken as a sign of quality. |

I attach the pic of a similar blade with a thick ganja, personally I think that these blades lack elegance but this is just my personal taste...
Best regards and wishes for 2021 |

Of course they do Jean. I totally agree.
But some of the people I have known during my lifetime who had unimpeachable integrity also lacked elegance. Whereas some of the most elegant people I have known were amongst the most untrustworthy. In appraising the feeling generated by a keris we call upon the experience we have had in appraising people, so it becomes almost entirely an understanding of the feeling that both the keris & the person generates in us, and this probably comes back to the socio-cultural base that we are working from. |

Hello Alan,
I am glad that your share my aesthetical point of view and I agree with you that some ugly-looking people are or were quite irreproachable (De Gaulle for instance). Last edited by Jean; 28th December 2020 at 06:45 PM. |
