Bernard Lewis (ed.) , THE WORLD OF ISLAM, NY/London: Thames and Hudson, 1976. Ppbd, large format, 360 pp, 490 illus (160 color), scholarly but readable anthology by noted contributors, like new cond.


Notable for: Ch. 8, "Armies of the Prophet" by Edmund Bosworth discussing: medieval Arab and Mamluk mil. org. and tactics, siege operations, armaments, naval developments. Many photoplates of arms incl. a magnificent early Ottoman kilij and a complete Mamluk mail armor with turban helm. Color and BW facsimiles from Arab and Mamluk military manuals showing siege engines and combo weapons AND A RARE DEPICTION OF MARTIAL ARTS PRACTICE (Mamluks doing cutting exercises with long sabers). Many photos of fortifications.

Other chapters also contain plates of battle scenes and men-at-arms
