To me this looks like an Ilokano dagger during the turn of the century. The mounts look like silver with patina.

Hi Carlos,
I agree with Battara that the blade looks late 19th C and Ilokano in manufacture. The spiral-grooved hilt is consistent; the narrow cross-guard and knuckle bow not so much; and the engraved decoration on the silverwork is unusual for Ilokano work. At one time the grooves in the grip would have been filled with braided wire (probably silver or brass). Nice dagger. Ian |

Hello Carlos, I totally agree with what both Jose and Ian have said with one exception. The groove cut into the hilt in my eyes looks a bit wide for the usual twisted wire making me believe that it would have originally been fitted with a silver, brass, copper or even possibly suassa ribbon instead. If I am correct the small nails that would have held it in place are still present and if copper or suassa it could actually still be present and just not clearly seen because of the oxidation it has acquired over the years. I am very happy (as well as extremely jealous) that you have been so fortunate to have been able to add the beautiful piece to your collection. My congratulations on such an excellent score.
Best, Robert |

Robert that is a good point on the ribbon. I have seen those on these pieces as well.

Hi Carlos,
Very beautiful Ilokano dagger! Are the mounts from silver? And are you able to see from which material the ribbons has been? Regards, Detlef |
