According to online sources, Ayvalik was a predominantly Greek town that was racially oppressed by the Ottomans, starting in 1910. In 1917, during WWI, the German General Otto Liman von Sanders, military advisor to the Ottomans, ordered the complete evacuation of the Greek inhabitants. The forced march into inner Anatolia was accompanied by many atrocities and substantial genocide of the Greek population.
