Default Another Panabas to share

Fortune smiled & I was able to acquire another massive panabas. It measures 34" long, 4.75" at its widest, and 3/4" thick at the base of its spine.

Hello Drac2k,

We should call you Tito panabas! Another nice panabas entered your collection, congrats!

Regards,
Detlef

Question

Hello David,

A really good one, again!

What are the metal bands and the bindings made from?

Regards,
Kai

Thank you both. I think the bands could be silver. The bindings appear to be a fine twine or thread; somewhat the consistency of fishing line before nylon.

Thanks, I think........as someone internet challenged (I just learned what LOL was this year), I hope it is a good thing. Tito, the former president of Yugoslavia, not so good, Tito Ortiz, the MMA Fighter, not too bad, and Tito Vodka, pretty darn good!

Fortune did smile on you, again. You must be a magnet for Panabas'.
This example is all business with a little flair with those silver bands.
Congrats.

kronckew,

The last one you posted is not a panabas. It is a Thai prah, which is a utility axe, somewhat like the Moro tabas on which the panabas is based. A prah of this form and decoration seems to be found most commonly in the northern areas of Thailand and neighboring Laos/Yunnan.

Give that man a cigar!

I know, that's why I said 'none' & 'almost'.
(If you save my posted photo, it's named "Thai Pra")

So it is. I misunderstood your post. I thought you believed it was a panabas.

I was probably being a bit too subtle with my humour in attempting to point out the similarities.

just for devilment, watched a FIF knife cutting challenge series finale last night, won by a man with a 'modified' panabas. Not sure what year tho. It had a one handed grip.

First, thanks from all for the kind comments; second. I loved the baby mime.
I got this item on an internet auction; it was the last item of 500 and in a group lot and not even mentioned. The picture was poor and as in so many old weapons, it had been covered in varnish( or maybe nicotine), that had blackened the item. Worse, the lot had a couple of creepy old dolls with the lot; I hate old dolls(but that is another story). It is amazing that I have so many "bloodletting weapons," but I draw the line on dolls.
I won it very reasonably, however, the freight was more than the cost of the lot; and yes, the dolls are gone!

Cool back story. Dolls ARE creepy. They stare at you. I'll have to look more carefully at those mixed lots. I've had one or two like that, I remember one lot with a glass oil lamp and a ceramic meat platter - and the sword I wanted. I drove about a half hour to pick it all up. I've gotten lazy since then. And poorer.

The funny thing about that mixed lot was that they sent me everything but the panabas; as I was frantically searching the box, I realized that it hadn't been shipped and in a panic, I called the auction house at 4:45 PM on a Friday advising them that it was missing; they phoned me back later that evening and they told me that they had found it and they would ship it Monday.
Must have been the work of those "Damn Dolls!"
