Moroccan Koummya blade mark ID

Hello,

Just got this Moroccan Koummya with a rather strange (to me) blade marking.

It is 41 cm (16") long, has a bone (or some kind of antler) hilt and silver armatures, hallmarked with the Moroccan ram mark.

Can anybody identify the marking (man's face) on the blade?!

Any other comments are welcomed!

Hi Marius,

Woaw that's a very nice catch.
One of the best kind of koummya to me, they are called hancer or khanjar!
I like their massive hilt and pommel.
For the stamp, these kind of stamps are from the the very end of the 19th and early 20th, 1920ties.
The human face from the end of 19th is Napoleon III, for your stamp maybe Raymond Poincare...
Do you have a silver proof stamp on the sheat?

Yes, the ram mark for 800 silver is on all fittings, hilt and scabbard. I believe the ram mark was used after 1925.

And the guy on the blade certainly looks like Raymond Poincare. But why would his face be on a Moroccan knife blade?

Hi Marius,

because it's an imported european blade. When you search a little bit in old threads you will see some more european marks on koummya blades, very common!

Hello Detlef,

I was aware of Koummyas with imported French blades, but those usually bore the Eiffel tower mark. Didn't find any reference about blades with face mark. However, the general aspect of the mark certainly looks very European.

That is a nice Koummya. When I saw the face stamp, I immediately thought of my Koummya, which is posted here in the Link. Although mine shows considerable more wear/usage. But yes, the same man's face. Maybe both of ours were made during the same period (?)

Yes they are from the same period or even the same blade maker...
For the origin it's complicated...
Look i have one with Napoleon III.
I did a mistake, these koummya are called Hamzar
but in fact its hancer or khanjar...it's all the same...
