Sorry, but I think it might... just might!... be of very, very recent manufacture.
If so, one cannot really discuss its origins, tradition, motives etc.: made for a bazaar sale. |

IT IS WHAT IS BEING MADE CURRENTLY FOR SALE TO TOURISTS. IT IS BASED ON BATAK SWORDS AND CARVEING. IT DOES MENTION THE HANDLE AND SCABBARD ARE MADE OF COMPOSITE MATERIAL BUT DOSEN'T MAKE IT CLEAR IF IT IS CAST AND NOT CARVED. THE BLADE IS A BIT FLASHIER THAN THE EARLIER RUNS OF THIS SWORD BUT I SUSPECT IT WILL STILL BE POORLY MADE. THE STORY OF CANNIBALS IS SOMETHING I HAD NOT SEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THESE ON EBAY PREVIOUSLY BUT THE ITEM IS FAR FROM RARE. A SOUVINEER WALL HANGER BUT NOT A REAL ETHINOGRAPHIC WEAPON JUST BASED ON THEM AND MASS PRODUCED FOR SOUVINEERS SOMEWHERE IN INDONESIA.

Just for future reference "composit(e) material" basically means molded plastic, so if a seller is at least honest enough to state that fact you can be pretty sure that the item isn't the real deal.
