I have an almost identical flask, and I think that while they emulate a camel's scrotum, they are actually made from other leather. Considering that whatever animal was used, it was dead anyway, I do not find it is such a big deal.
I also wonder about the Afghan attribution, as mine is decorated with images that look very Persian to me. |

This came out of afghanistan in the early sixties, with a flint hammer/patch tool.
