A friend of mine has this rather nice Sheffield made coachman's / horseman's knife and noticed this set of geometric marks on one of the tools ... does anyone know what they are ? Thank you.

I've had a couple of these with the recess under the flat (stone picker?) blade and I seem to remember being told it was for cracking hazel nuts, I would assume that the chisel nicks were an aid to the griping of the cases.
