Shopping for Kukri in Katmandu
Hello gentlemen;
My mother, who is a traditional Turkish miniature painter, will be in Katmandu, Nepal to attend an art festival in the city in a couple of weeks. This situation presents a unique opportunity for me to be able to get a nice, traditional, quality Kukri from its homeland. But as you can guess, my mom knows nothing about blades and has no idea what a kukri is, and how to be able to avoid tourist pieces. Even though I plan to give her a crash course on the subject, I, myself, only have supeficial knowledge about kukris, and adding the linguistic barrier and time limitations etc. it will be a challenge for her to buy a good one for a reasonable price. So, I ask kukri experts in the forum to help me, point me to the right direction on where to find a good, traditional kukri(nothing fancy or highly priced) in Katmandu, and easiest ways to avoid tourist pieces.. Keep in mind these advices will be for a person who is a complete ignorant about any kind of blades. So, it would be ideal for me if you can point to a specific adress, shop, maker or brand; though any kind of help will be greatly appreciated. |

Sancar, if the lady will be taking the kukrie into Turkey, I suggest you look into the laws before attempting to do so.

Thank you gentlemen for your kind answers. According to your answers and my additional research, the shop called Khukri house(Kukri house or khukuri house etc.) comes highly recommended it seems. But I found several websites with that name, can anyone tell me which one is the original?
