Default a Mystery ....

I have been loaned this by a lady who has had this item hanging up in her in her cottage . She was told that it was a whaling tool for cutting up baleen but I am unsure. Anyone seen anything like this before > Overall length inc shaft is 100 cm , blade length inc socket is 30 cm. The width of the tip is 5 cm . The blade is very sharp both at the tip and the edges.
