Wooden helmets of the Igorot, Luzon
I would like to present you some helmets from the Philippines. Though there is a lot of different types of helmets in the armouries of the peoples of Indonesia and the Philippines, I believe that helmets out of one single piece of wood are especial for the Bontoc and Ifugao of the Cordillera of Luzon. You see three pot-like helmets Oklop of the Bontoc, plain and with carvings, pre-WW II from different years, imo. This type is well known.
The rare bowl-like war hat with a decoration of white metal on the top is from the fifties imo, but the type is known already since the 19th century. But I never saw in a collection or the literature a piece like the helmet with the brim from the end of 19th century, as well from the Bontoc. It looks like a copy of British or American steel helmets which came into fashion around 1910, but I do not now too much about the year of introduction of modern steel helmets. I added pics from these two. Every comment would be highly welcome. Udo |
