Default Interesting mandau handle

This is a mandau that Fred Coluzzi sent us some years ago. He says
the handle is a rough cast Japanese naval D-ring style. But was it put on
by a native that liked that form, or was it made by a Japanese soldier who
liked the blade. There are two characters at the base of the blade that
could be either Chinese or Japanese although i was told that it could be
Korean. The blade is very well made, with some of the most delicate fret-
work that i have seen in a mandau. No scabbard. What do you think.
Dave.
