Default Hilt Material Piha Kaetta

This caught My eye and I haven't begun to research it much. I'm wondering about the material the hilt is made from and the fact most that I've seen so far have a metal shank this one seems to have only the round peg running through it. There should be a cap but it doesn't appear to have been recently lost.
Thank you, Steve
