I think you can do that by inserting a Hyperlink from the thumbnail to the larger file located on a drive attached to your computer. The pathway would need to be specified correctly in that hyperlink. According to the Help File on my version of MS Word for Mac OSX, it is possible to insert hyperlinks for graphics or text within a document. I've not tried it with graphics yet. What I have done instead is have a short text title (immediately adjacent to the thumbnail) that is hyperlinked to the larger file. Not as elegant as clicking on the thumbnail but it works fine.
