I KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT DAN MASKS BUT DO HAVE QUITE A FEW MASKS FROM AFRICA AND ELSE WHERE. AS NO ONE HAS CHIMED IN I WILL MAKE A FEW COMMENTS. YOUR MASK SHOWS SOME AGE AS WELL AS A FEW RESTORATIONS. THIS IS NOT UNUSUAL AS THESE MASKS WERE STORED BETWEEN USE AND WERE OFTEN REPAIRED OR HAD THINGS ADDED OVER TIME. THE WOOD MASK AS WELL AS THE COWRIE SHELL HEADDRESS ALL APPEAR OLD AND ORIGINAL WITH SOME PAINT LOSS. THE TEETH APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN TOUCHED UP WITH WHITE PAINT AND THE BEADS WERE LIKELY ADDED AT SOMETIME IN THE MASKS LIFE. THESE THINGS ARE NOT A PROBLEM AND THE MASK SHOULD SHOW SIGNS OF USE. IN MY OPINION IT IS NOT JUST ONE MADE FOR SALE IN THE ETHNOGRAPHIC ART MARKET OR A TOURIST MASK. A NICE MASK
P.S. IF YOU SELL IT IN FUTURE I WOULD REMOVE THE HAWKS FOOT TO AVOID POSSIBLE PROBLEMS IT IS ALSO A MORE RECENT ADD ON AND ADDS NOTHING TO THE MASK. IT WAS PROBABLY A FETISH ADDED BY A PREVIOUS TRIBAL OWNER. |
