Help! I have a bad infection, again a kris!

Hello, I have watched this auction and see that I will get the chance to do my next good bargain,so I give a moderate bid and win again. I think that it is a Sulu kris with a late 19th c. blade and maybe newer fittings. Until now I don't receiced it and only have the poor picture from the seller.

Congratulations on this piece. The blade at least is Maguindanao and older. The scabbard is later WWII. Need to see close ups of the hilt, but the pommel is made of banati (burled) wood of some kind. Shame the scabbard is damaged, that MOP is lovely.

Yes, I am turning into a Moro manic, special when I get the pieces by this prices.

My guess that it is a Sulu kris was founded by the horse hoof pommel since Cato write that this is typical for Sulu.

That the sheat is from WWII was clear.

Looks like a nice blade again!

Horse hoof pommel are often found on Sulu kris but not limited to that region. Please post close-ups when you receive it.

Yeah Sajen, you're sick alright...

I suggest that you just pack up all these Moro thingies that you have been picking up and mail them straight to me.

I was watching this auction as well, but i tend to like my kris complete and the broken sheath bothered me. I'd say you got a good deal though and the kris itself is a nice one.
I agree with José that the blade looks Maguindanao, but i think it was rehilted at some time and the sheath is certainly newer than the blade.
Nice catch! Love to see it cleaned up.

Another thing to consider is that there was a lot of trade between the Sulu people and the Maguindanao. This includes blades as well. I have seen Sulu hilts on Maguindanao and visa versa. No surprise here. Might also explain the form of WWII scabbard used as well.

Hello Kai,

thank you. I still have to learn. You all have to explain one time how you can see by the "elephant trunk" from which tribe the blade forged.

normally I also look for complete kris, i.e. with unbroken sheath and easy restoreable but the price have been very low so I try a bid.

It seems to be a lot of sword for the money! I've always wanted one of these. If I'd known they could be picked up so cheap now, I'd be bidding ......

I think you can bid by registering another account on US site but if not working you can use services like "hop shop go"

Today I received the kris, with the kris I am very pleased but the sheath is in very poor condition like already to seen on the pictures from the seller. There is no mother of pearl but maybe have been there before?

Yes, separate gonjo. The back of the cross-piece of the sheath is covered with horn but in front the cutting lines of the piece of horn are very straight so it was my first guess that it was framed with an other material and this guess was MOP. But now I am very sure that it was aluminium since at some places it is still present. The up from the mouth for example is covered with this metal and also the nails whereby the horn is fixed to the wood are from Al. And I think that I have seen something similar before.

BTW, I have cleaned the handle and polished the blade and think that I will etch the blade tomorrow. Here a pic of the cleaned handle.

Thank you! Yes, I think there have been MOP or more probably a aluminium frame since there are still some pieces of this metal existent.

Have etched the blade this evening and it schows a similar lamination like the last one. Is this a very common lamination by philippine kris blades?

Actually yes, it is a common lamination pattern for many Moro pieces, especially after 1800.
