CAMBODIAN DHA for COMMENT
Another Cambodian Dha from the same source as the others recently on this Forum. The scabbard appears identical to C0029 on the Dha Research Archive Site. The hilt however is much different, though still upward tilted from blade line. Dimensions 29 1/2" overall out of scabbard. Blade 22 1/2".

Now that is an unusual dha. The steel and wood have a great patina on them. Clearly the odd handle is either original or a very old retro-fit. The knuckle-bow of course isn't typical, but its not unheard of. The ones that I have seen (3 or 4) did not have a certain enough provenance to enable any conclusion as to the who/what/where/when/why of the odd handle. I do have to say that you see some of the most eccentric dha from Cambodia. I think it was a real melting pot of styles.

Yes I agree Mark. The Provenanced Cambodian Dha I have are certainly a strange lot compared with other more "conventional" dha. The one common thing common with most of them is that they have a "tsuba" of sorts, and the handles (where they are totally wood), have the turned top of one or more rings of decreasing size.
This particular one, as stated came originally from the same source as the others recently shown, but by way of a relist, as I missed out on it when it was first up for sale. The guard looks to me as if it has always been there, and in my opinion is not a later addition. Regards Stuart |
