Can Anyone identify these small leather and chainmail pouches?
I am trying to figure out what these small (3" without chainmail) pouches are. It has been suggested to me that they may be Spanish or Ottoman in origin. They seem to be made to wear on a belt.

I do not know what this is. Your photos are a little poor. From what I can see this looks very much like it is from the Sahel or the southern Sahara which covers many modern nations. What you have looks as if it is late 19th early 20 century. I wonder whether it is a purse, or black powder container. better pictures would help. I am sure there are others here that will be able to tell you what they are.

If you look at this page a little over half way down there is a picture with different types of belts. If you look at #4 there is an object that looks like these which says it would be an 18th century bullet pouch from India. It doesn't show the chainmail, but does state elsewhere that they wore chainmail suits until the late 18th century.
What do you think? |
