Yataghan inscription
While still in Bulgaria I acquired a yataghan in excavated condition. Can someone help with translating the inscription, which is the only thing worth posting? I am aware that the picture quality is horrible, and I will try to get a better shot, but it has been dark and rainy for almost two weeks here now.
Thanks, Teodor Last edited by TVV; 28th September 2006 at 11:19 AM. |

Hi,
I could not be sure about the date and the name of the sword maker. A better picture would help. The rest has a very common formula; Sahib Osman (owner Osman) Ya Muhammed, Kıl şefa'at Ümmetindir O Muhammed! Intercede on the day of Judgement on the behalf of him, who is one of your Ummah (community of believers). |

Ah, um, could we get pictures of the whole thing, please?

Zifir: thank you very much for the translation. I have attached a picture of the right side of the inscription, which I believe has the date and the maker's signature, but it might be that it is simply not preserved in legible condition.
Battara: here is a picture of the whole piece, but it is hardly worth seeing - this is a yataghan in poor condition, discovered in a village in Bulgaria where someone replaced the original hilt (which probably rotted away) with this deer horn. It will need thorough restoration, but as of now there is no way I can export it outside of Bulgaria. If I ever do, then I would love to have you work on it. Regards, Teodor |

Just a guess, I read the date as 226 and believe that it stands for 1226. (1810 / 1811 AD)

Sorry, I could not make the swordmaker's name out. For the date, I believe Rather is right, it's 1226.
