Thumbs up

A NICE TRADITIONAL MADE POTO SWORD COMPLETE WITH FETISH BAG COVERED WITH SOME SORT OF BIG CAT HAIR AS IS USUAL. MANY OF THE OLD ONES CAME OUT OF AFRICA IN THE PAST WITHOUT A FETISH BAG AS THE MISSIONARIES MADE THE GOOD NATIVES REMOVE THEM AS THEY WERE TOLD THAT WAS SUPERSTITION AND AGAINST CHRISTIAN TEACHINGS. YOURS IS ONLY MISSING THE SCABBARD. AS TO AGE IT MAY BE FAIRLY RECENT JUDGING FROM THE PICTURES, THE FETISH BAG APPEARS TO BE VERY RECENT. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO JUDGE BETTER WHEN THE ITEM IS RECEIVED. EITHER WAY IT WAS WELL MADE BY THE TRIBAL PEOPLE IN THE TRADITIONAL WAY AND WAS CERTIANLY A GOOD DEAL PRICE WISE. CONGRADULATIONS!!

Vandoo

I don't think this sword is older than the 1950s to early 1960s. It's definately not tourist quality. I will bring it to the show to get a better opinion from the experts.

Lew,

Old or not so old, I think it's a fine specimen. Congratulations.

When you receive the piece, could you take a picture of the small wooden object which hangs from the handle ? It looks interesting. I have never seen a Poto knife with a similar fetish.

Because the fetish bag looks newer, this doesn't mean that the sword itself isn't older. All depends where it has been during the last couple of decades. I once had similar sword on which the bag had lost its hair at one side. It had been hanging in a collection for quite some years and by rubbing against the wall the hair was lost. The other side looked fine.

So wait and see.

Yes, nice one, the handle of the older Poto is often covered with brass sheet but not always.
This one is complete (except scabbard) in good state.
Good price.
