American Boarding Axes
As many of you know by now boarding axes are my main area of interest these days and my next project is to improve the information on American Boarding Axes. This will be extremely hard as very few have survived.
Using Gilkerson's Types - there are perhaps only a handful of Type I and Type IIs in existence. Type IIIs are more common and were manufactured from around 1812 to the Civil War. I am building a dataset of measurements from collectors I have contact with as this is useful for determining whether there ever was a government spec and to identify variants. There are I believe identifiable variants for both Type II and Type III. If you own any American Boarding Axe and would like to add to the information please pm me (your privacy will be respected) or add to the thread here. If you have museum pictures I'd be happy to have those as well. Thanks in advance. A Type III to the left and a very rare Type I shown to the right. |
