Default Hanuman tempat keris

I believe this is called a tempat keris, but I'm sure I have it wrong. I picked this up at auction in Chicago back in 1993, but I know pretty much nothing about it... I bought it because I'd never seen one available before. I'd love to hear your thoughts reagrding it.

Best,

Darryl

Welcome to the forum Darryl.
While "tempat" does seem to literally mean "place" or "holder", most of the time that i have seen the word used in connection with keris it has been in reference to "blawong", keris boards which hang on the wall. I don't know if the term is correct for describing these Balinese keris holding statues.
Yours is actually a fairly common figure, probably intended to be Hanuman, an ape-like Hindu deity. Despite the age cracks and chipped paint yours is probably from the latter part of the 20th century.

BTW Darryl, if you read through all the forum rules you will find that we really discourage the use of hotlinks to post photos and would like everyone to upload directly to our site in order to keep images in our archives for later reference. If you were to remove these images from your server future viewers of this thread would have no visual point of reference. I have taken the liberty to do this for you this time and would ask that in the future you use the "Manage Attachments" option that you find in the box below your posting window. Thanks.

Here is a link to another thread on Balinese keris holders. If you look at post #25 you will see my own example of the Hanuman holder which is quite similar to yours. Hanuman is a popular character for these.
You will also notice in post #11 what happens when people post images that are hosted by other servers.

No problem, glad to have you back....changes have certainly taken place in the past few years so it might be a good idea to reacquaint yourself with the policies...
