Another Panay Bolo
I found this one when in Baltimore and for me it is a new variation of the Bakunawa hilt.
Was this hilt version popular during a certain time period or is it just a local variation? Michael |

BTTT
Congrats, Michael, that's a really nice one!
I guess like most genuine variants this will be tough to pin down to an geographical origin (or, IMVHO less likely, period). Hopefully our Visayan experts will chime in with more info... Regards, Kai |

A NICE EXAMPLE WITH MORE VERY GOOD CARVING ON THE HANDLE THAN IS USUAL. I THINK IT REPRESENTS A DOG . DOGS WERE IMPORTANT AROUND THE VILLAGE FOR GIVING WARNING OF STRANGERS, FOR HUNTING AND CLEANING UP SCRAPS OF FOOD AROUND THE VILLAGE. IN HARD TIMES PERHAPS THEY SERVED AS THE MAIN DISH AS IN MANY SOCIETYS AROUND THE WORLD THEY OFTEN DID. MAN IS SENTIMENTAL BUT TRADITION OR NECESSITY OFTEN MAKES US BECOME MUCH MORE PRACTICAL.
I ASSUME THE HANDLE AND GAURD ARE CARVED FROM BUFFALOW HORN, ITS A VERY NICE ONE CONGRADULATIONS. |
