European style ottoman musket
It has been suggested that this high quality inlay work in the stock of this musket, must have been made in an Istanbul workshop. What is your opinion about the place of manufacture and the style of decoration?

I do not know if this very attractive gun was made in Istanbul, or somewhere else in the Balkans, as this type of guns was popular all over the place in the 19th century and there were talented artisans in many centers throughout the Empire. Are there any tughras to attest to silver content or any other markings on the fittings?
Whatever the case, it is a gorgeous gun of the highest quality and I thank you for sharing it here. |

Thanks for the answer my friend TVV. There are no tugras on the silverwork, but maybe the silver rings were made in a different place than the rest of the gun. What is superb here is the silver inlay design. It could have been made by a European artisan working in an Ottoman centre.

Hi Eftihis,
Reminds me of the wirework on 'Queen Anne" pistols, late 17th early 18thC. Regards, Norman. Last edited by Norman McCormick; 26th September 2023 at 02:01 PM. |
