Default SAMAL BARUNG2

Hi friends,

Another treasure to share- from the collection of my father. The barung is said to be Samal.

Loss of MOP or turtle scutes at both ends of the scabbard. The size is quite thin in terms of width and overall stature. A barung intended for a child, a woman or for concealment perhaps.

OAL: 21 inches/ 14 inch blade with a blade width(widest area) of only 1.75 inches.

Banati wood handle/pommel and silver ferrule.

Enjoy

Yves

Hello Yves,

Nice one! Would agree with you about the Samal origin. Here is one from my collection but much longer as yours but the style is similar: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=barong

For comparison here is my 19th century Samal barong (made of mastodon molar ivory):

The pictures are rather dark and the hilt is hard to see. However, I think both the hilt and scabbard are pre-WWII, perhaps 1920–1940. A clearer picture of the hilt would help.
