Default BEYOND THE CURRENTS: THE CULTURE AND POWER OF SULU

Following from the heads-up from our forum friend Nacho...

The exhibit details are as follows:

BEYOND THE CURRENTS: THE CULTURE AND POWER OF SULU
Cone Room and Dragon Gallery, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines
Ongoing until September 24

With power as its central message, Beyond the Currents: The Culture and Power of Sulu narrates the story of power wielded over European expansion in the lucrative China trading zone. The exhibit also presents the Sulu Sultanate's culture as the heart of a trade zone, market center, and regional power.

Curated by a team led by Dr. Abraham Sakili and Ramon Villegas, Beyond the Currents showcases archival photographs, jewelry, textiles, and ritual objects from private collectors and museum partners. Rare suits of armor and weapons highlight the might of the Sultanate, which survived attempts at Spanish colonization for over 300 years

I wish I were there. It would be interesting to see the regalia of the Sulu Sultanate, which was once very rich.

Default catalog

I have some items displayed in the Sulu exhibit. They don't have plans to print a catalog. I will follow up, though, their promise to take pictures and compile them in a disk. During the opening, we thought the pictures can be distributed to schools.

Students who have visited the exhibit are amazed with the high cultural achievement of the Sulu people.

The book advertised in the website has been around for years. It was not made for this exhibit. I have a copy and it is a good book to have.

Nacho would be in a better position to provide us an update on the exhibit catalogue, brochure or any printed document, as I have not visited the exhibit myself. I am currently travelling in East Africa but will be in Manila in a couple of weeks and visit the museums.

Default pics from exhibit

As taking pics is not allowed, this is the best my undercover agent was able to produce from the Sulu exhibit
