Lombok long-knife or short pedang?
Hello
I had seen for a long time on the internet or at the antique shops this style of lombok handle but never fixed on their blade. I'm glad I finally managed to find a complete set. The sheath is made of wood covered with brass repoussé. The buffalo horn handle with silver-colored metal base (or low grade silver?) The blade doesn't have a pamor, it is 32cm long, 4mm thick at the base and 3,4cm wide. I think it dates from the first half of the 20th century but I have no proof. Just a feeling due to the patina. But it is his short pedang or long knife? At the same vendor there was a 15cm longer model but with a more round and simple handle. Unfortunately I did not have enough money for both ... What is the name of this weapon? Thank you for your help. |

Djelenga gives it as :-
BERANG/GOLOK "Berang" is a regional variation of "Parang". It is not a "PEDANG", a pedang is a sword, a parang is a general purpose tool, think "machete". |

Like Alan write it's a Berang (parang) or Golok from Lombok, a very nice piece, love the handle carving. The description from Djelenga in his book "Keris di Lombok" on page 338 say that blades come also without pamor. Here a link to my example, different and simple but the blade as well without pamor: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=Lombok
Very nice piece, I really like it! Regards, Detlef |
