Default Gunong for comments

One of my newly acquired pieces is the Gunong in the photos below. I estimate it to be from around the '50 or '60.

Any comments would be welcomed!

Regards,

Marius

Hi Marius:

Nice gunong. I think your age estimate could be right. Maybe a little later--these are still being made, and the brass hilted ones are generally late 20th C. The okir looks like Maranao work.

Ian.

Hello Ian and thank you for your comment!

What is the "okir?"

The hilt is not brass but a copper based alloy (could be Cu-Ag or some kind of Souassa).

Marius

Okir is the style of the engravings at the blade and scabbard mounts and the style of the other metalwork from the mounts.

I think that this piece could come from the late 30ies to late 50ies.

Detlef
