Bali? Lombok?
Think that I'll need to break out some pineapple juice. Hope the scabbard is not missing too big a piece on the front.
First keris I have bought in a while. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=270142667075 Comments? |

Needs some restoration, but it looks like a nice, substantial blade. I like the deep carving of the ricikan. The missing piece seems to be part of the pelet "veneer", not the actual structure of the sheath. I would think it would be a difficult part to replace, but the sarung looks otherwise intact. I don't think there are any distinguishing features that will determine whether this one is Bali or Lombok.
Looks like you found a sleeper at a good price. |

Nice keris and a good price. Seems Balinese to me. I have a keris with a similar hilt. They say the cord wrapping is human hair.

Not a bad keris, Bill. Typical Balinese style of blade of middle quality, are there a couple of gaps from the blade? You can probably rework the eges to remove the worst of this gapping. You could always ignore it, but I think one of these gaps is a bit too big to be acceptable.
The handle is a bit knocked around, but should be easy enough to tidy up. Pity about the gandar veneer. Only way to fix this is with a pendok. |

Loncengan
Hi Bill,
Your new keris and sheath, is either Bali or Lombok. But the handle or hilt (Danda or Danganan, according to Mr Lalu Djelenga's Lombok keris book) is from the type of "loncengan". That is the simplified of the "cenangan" type... In Jakarta (Indonesia), you still possible to repair the missing veneer, by replacing the stripped layer of the "pelet" (of the timoho wood -- Kleinhovia hospita L) with a similar (not exactly the same, but old) layer. There are some good "mranggi" (keris sheath maker) in Jakarta and of course in Yogyakarta, Surakarta, who can repair such missing thing... But unfortunately, you are out there.... Ganjawulung |
