Indeed this type of hilt and ferrule is often seen with a wooden scabbard.
This example obviously has suffered from time.
Gold inlay in the iron have almost all gone.
The crown has lost its enamel, although it could be that it never had enamel.

The scabbard mouth and silver work could well be of a later date.
But done with a lot of craftmanship and taste I must say.
