A book in this state is termed 'unopened', pages that have ragged edges are termed 'uncut'. This is normal for books of a certain age, it was cheaper to print several pages of text on the one sheet of paper and fold it to fit the book format and of course cheaper to leave it 'unopened'. Unless you wish to keep the volume as a 'collectable' in its own right open the pages with a suitable knife. I dabbled in books a long time ago and the only thing left is a mint 1st Ed of Winnie the Pooh I gave my wife as a present, I wish I could go back as I suppose we all do, if only we knew then what we know now.!!!!!
