Tboli
Hello Ian & Xas,
In terms of the textile, it's abaca but doesn't appear Tboli. It actually looks like Subanen. I'd be interested in seeing what's underneath the textile and if the scabbard has...

Textile
Hi Ian,
I feel like quite a few of these lumad scabbards (like the one you showed, not the nice old Bagobo and sometimes Blaan/Tagakaolo examples with great ‘mounds’ of textiles and sometimes...

Textile
Hi Ian,
It’s always a bit hard to identify a textile when it’s only a small piece, but the scabbard you’ve shown appears to be wrapped in Tboli t’nalak.

Bagobo
Hello,
Very nice example.
Just to clarify, ‘t’nalak’ is very specific to the Tboli. Bagobo weaving is generally known as ‘inabal’. Both utilize abaca and the ikat method and while there are...

Blaan bell
This type of bell is commonly found amongst the Blaan. Very old and no longer crafted. The photo attached was taken during a visit with the Blaan near Malungon in April 2016.

Tboli
Hello,
Just a few quick notes on the chain-link and bells on Tboli hilts. The ‘loops’ at the end of the hilts were certainly created to attach adornments like chain links and bells. However we...

Woman’s blade
This small woman’s blade is Tboli. Aside from the bells and chains noted, the small ‘half-moon’ markings on the blade are very Tboli.

Hello Yves,
Thanks for posting the photos. I’m always happy to see these pieces.
It appears as if the guard is sort of flush with the top of the blade. Does it show signs of being ground...
