Seems like a rich man's tool. It is maybe analogous to a gentleman's silver budding knife, if not for the same purpose. Maybe for some sort of pruning? Was there a type of genteel plant husbandry...

Joe that is quite a rabbit hole you are going down. I can appreciate this as I am also a global learner and ideas tend to spider web and morph into related concepts for me as well.

Yes, the...

My understanding is that falchions are very sharp with a thin cross section at the edge to be able to slice through gaberdine. Is this the case with Stortas as well?

Corn knife was my first impression. Except for the spine. I have never seen a spine like that on an American agricultural blade. I guess a broken saber could explain it.

An older Colins (1940s) often had a large stamp 1X2" or so from memory on the blade near the handle. The arm logo was part of the stamp. These were produced in the US if I recall correctly. I could...

Thanks David. For some reason I did not process the 18cm when I looked at the screen. On a side note, didn't many Sumatran Sewars have a blade length of around 18cm? Were these considered decorative...

The complete sword possibly being a 19th century composite I was mainly asking about the hilt. Which was identified as being late 17th century Ukranian. The straightness of the handle seemed odd to...

Hetman Ivan Mazepa's Saber

I recently read Denis Toichkin's Sabers of Hetman Ivan Mazepa article from which this photo was taken of what he concludes to be a composite saber. Where does this particular hilt fit into the...

Jean, am I right to think the profile of your blades are Bugis influenced, if not their cross section? The cross section being roughly a diamond (please excuse the unintentional pun) like the...

David, Jim & Ed, this has been an interesting and possibly fruitful discussion. Is this an ethnographic weapon? In many ways no. Is it primarily a weapon or a tool? Tool, I believe, but there are...

Interestingly enough, for what it is worth, I found a stag handled navaja on Wikipedia's English site under the entry "Navaja" that is attributed to 1790 and uses a round pin as well.

It is an interesting and apparently well item from the photographs. That said I am curious about a few things concerning this piece.

1)I find the round pin odd. Why not a deep, square cut notch...

Of Brazilian use or manufacture? Would you place the age between 1940-1960 or after? I would imagine the sheath is not original. It is quite well built, being water molded, tooled and the frog is...

If it is Rama, then is his adversary Ravana with the multiple (100) heads? Isn't he usually dark rather than light skinned? I had been puzzling over that one before you wrote.
