Halloo Ian! Based on the spine thickness, robust and rounded-end tang (I saw this when I reset the blade), laminated construction, and well-detailed hilt, I would posit this to be a late 1800s garab...

Hello sir, nice observation- before each cut I'm using the thumb notch for indexing, but as the blade falls and bites into the target I release it for extra cutting power and post-cut grip dynamics. ...

Short and thick garab

Finally got this garab after 2.5 years in limbo (it couldn't be shipped from Spain in 2023 because of suddenly stricter blade shipping guidelines). This is the shortest-bladed garab I've wielded so...

Thanks very much!

It's common to be confused regarding the kampilan's proper wield. I believe the mainstream depiction is the culprit- of course, these depictions were gleaned from pre-WW2...

Ian, I'm betting it's Maranao because I've been observing a trend of Maranao-provenanced blades (kris, kampilan, panabas, etc) having silver or brass inserts,...

Mixed-age and mixed-ethnicity kampilan

It's pretty rare for a well-preserved piece to pop up in the Philippines (most of the nice pieces are in US, EU, etc) so I jumped at this opportunity. This kampilan is a good example of how a Moro...

Yup, that's nice. I'm postulating that it's Samar or Leyte-origin, because there have been provenanced Samar or Leyte sundang with a similar hilt; they also added a pin to higher-rank sundang. I'm...

The blade on the middle has potential to be old, but i can't tell for sure because the gangya is obstructed. The leftmost and rightmost, I'm guessing are pre-WW2 at least. The dresses could have been...

It's not so difficult to receive ivory, from a Filipino POV (importation, incoming). However, it's very difficult- or probably even impossible- to export ivory (PH to other countries).

I dug up this dress-less Maranao kris (blade only), and decided to rebuild it with a vintage Maranao hilt with carabao horn pommel, plus Zamboanga-made asang-asang. I decided not to include a ferrule...

Good point- although it's very much possible to isolate the imagery based on the traditions inherent in each Moro tribe within a specific era- in my example, since it's vintage Maranao sarimanok and...

Necro'ing this thread because I fancied putting a Maranao kris (with a vintage hilt) beside my vintage sarimanok.

It's pretty close- but in the correct-side-up orientation, not in the upside-down...

Halloo Ian! I think the pommel represents either lineage or political alignment. I'm betting it was made sometime pre-war, most conservative estimate would be postwar.

When I encountered this kris, I immediately remembered this thread and my assertion that the figural may be a naga, or snake. I encountered this pre-WW2 Maguindanao kris blade with a Maranao hilt...

That's right- as of modern time, both the Warays and Cebuanos use "sundang" as a catch-all term for just about any blade :)

Really nice sundang! I believe that one comes from Leyte, likely late 1800s.
