Sewar with Ivory

Blade is 10 3/4" long. Heptagonal silver ferrule, copper ring with brass inlay. Older piece. Sumatra.

Nice Bill :)
I think the ferrule was added more recently? May be a repair? Lew |
I guess it is possible, but, in the hand, seems to have wear similar to the rest of the piece. Handle is tight. The area where the ferrule meets the top of the blade is steel (or something dark -- not silver -- with thin silver over it. Will take some pictures looking down the blade.
I feel the blade and ferrule have been overcleaned. But I like seven sided objects. |
Bill
There might be an iron or steel bolster under the silver which seems the same as the material on the tip of the scabbard was probably not original to the sewar but added later to spruce it up? Lew |
Yeah Lew, looks like the ferrule has seen one functional repair and one cosmetic repair.
I love the ivory; it has aged beautifully. |
Nice ivory hilt!
The crosspiece look a bit like those on Aceh Sikim scabbards, which is unusual on a Sewar. Could you post a close up of the crosspiece from the side? Michael |

Also some closeups of the ferrule. I think it may have been repaired. Meant to take a careful look at the scabbard tip. Will send some closeups later. Maybe it was done at the same time? |
It certainly has had some modifications in the past.
But please bring me a piece like this 2 times a year and I will be a happy man. (even happier that is :D :D :D ) Love the ivory handle. Ps. doesn't the handle shape make this a tombok lada  |
Thanks Bill,
I find the cross piece very unusual (and interesting) for being a Sewar. To me it looks like a miniature Aceh Sikin scabbard crosspiece. On the TL question I think that the hilt shape alone doesn't make it a Tombok Lada. But the scabbard's shape, by itself, makes it a Sewar... Michael |
My understanding also about the scabbard shape, Michael. TLs have a more rounded scabbard crosspiece. The hilts are, or can be, very similar.
Perhaps the previous owner could have had two scabbards depending on whether he wanted to wear a TL or a Sewar? :D ;) ;) |
Not only are the collars later but so is the scabbard tip. Love the ivory. Will you etch the blade Bill?
