Advice on shrinked scabbards?
 

Dear forumites,

Now it has happened again - I can't get one of my Tenegre out of it's wooden scabbard. This is the second time it has happened to me and for some strange reasons it has only involved my Visayan swords.
All practical advice appreciated.

That's odd. Don't think I have had that problem with wooden scabbards -- leather certainly.

Have you tried rocking the sword back and forth to free it up. Sometimes a fat-bellied blade will get stuck but you can usually wiggle it loose. Eventually they do come out. Be careful the edge doesn't work through the scabbard and bite you.

Would you post some pictures of the bolo and scabbard when you get it out.

Sure, as soon as I get it out ;)

I have tried the wiggling part already but on the top of the scabbard there is a broad leather band.
Maybe that's what has shrunk due to change of climate?
Do you have any tips on how to solve that?

Leather Therapy (product) perhaps ?
Look at your local tack shop or do a web search .
After getting it out Possibly a little silicone spray down the scabbard mouth ?

Ah yes, the leather around the throat. That could be the problem.

I've also found that a little Renaissance Wax, and probably other silicone-based polishes too, applied to the blade helps things slide smoother as well protecting from rust.

Have you identified the domed coins that are used on this hilt ?
As I recall it is missing one or two on the other side , no ?
These could probably be easily replaced . :)
Silver is a snap to work with . :D

Yes, it's the opposite "ear-part" that is missing a coin and 2 smaller silver disks. Not sure if I really want to replace it.

I had been looking at that and what the replacement needs would be. I would have to price out US issued PI silver coins of the same era and then shape them and then work on the silver stem to make them stay. Not that difficult of a process overall. Most of the price would depend on the coins used.

I should have qualified that statement a little ; work such as this is fairly easy ; when I was a kid we all made rings from silver quarters ; lots of tapping on the edge and after a few hours , drill out the center and file smooth .

Now repousse and engraving etc. that's a whole 'nother ball game . :D

Sorry Ian, did not read your post as carefully as I should have. To make this hilt out of silver.....hmmm......the work itself might cost $500? Lot of work would go into something like this. Wonderful puppy!(woof)
