Yeah, she's a cutey, but ol' Dad's standing around outside with his spear held with oh so casual competence.......I'm pretty sure that's a man, too. Westerners (including me) sometimes have trouble sexing SE Asians in old pictures. I think it's partly the gracility of the people (both from genetics and healthy lifestyles), and partly that the cultural gender cues are quite different. I have recently read how the Brittish in India used (?) to speak down of the Hindoos for seeming effeminate (to their foreign eyes)........

The Chieftan with the spear and shield is most definitely a man. There is a good studio portrait of him in Jonathan Best's book of postcards. According to the caption in the book, the sash is what marks him as a chief.

Bagobo men have long been known for their fine and graceful facial features. Some of the early descriptions noted the difficulty of separating Bagobo men and women by their facial appearances.

I, um, meant the woman in the window... Actualy the caption came from an ad for the postcard that said, "Picture of Bagobo Woman Warrior." I thought :o that she was kind of flat chested and just a trifle ugly. But who am I to judge Bagobo standards? :confused: ---- :eek:
