Hello friends,

a recent acquisition. IMHO a kris of Tausug origin? Any thoughts?

Possible age?

Kind regards

Yves

Hello Yves,

An interesting kris. I agree with your assessment that this is probably not a Mindanao kris, but I'm not convinced that it was made entirely by Tausug craftsmen. The scabbard and hilt are consistent with Tausug work, and for that reason one could label it as a Tausug kris. However, I think the blade shows Malayan features as well (the style of carving the "arrowhead" area, for example), and the grip area of the hilt suggests a similar influence to me.

Based on the scabbard and hilt, I would date the present ensemble as about 1960s or 1970s.

The grenning and okir point to Maguindanao work to me for the blade. I agree with Ian's assessment of dating and scabbard work of Tausug origins.
