Old Pantar dance shield for sharing
11 Attachment(s)
When we speak about Indonesian shields, Dayak shields come to mind, the nice Aceh shields and salawakus from Halmahera maybe.
But only a few from you will have seen a shield from Alor, or in this case a shield from Pantar, the neighbour island in the West with similar culture as Alor. It's an old dance shield, first half of the 20th century in front painted with modern dye in the typical zig-zag design. It is 136 cm high and around 18 cm broad. I've taken pics from "War Art & Ritual" for comparison, shield 48 & 49. |
I don't know how I missed this?

Same here. Also not familiar with this type of shield.
Thanks for posting this. |
I have guessed that most members are not familiar with these shields, the reason why I started this thread. ;)

Alor, Pantar, close to the Moluccan archipelago.
Known nowadays for its beautiful sealife and (scuba)diving. Once fierce warriors, not to mess with... Enclosed a couple of pics from Alor |
Bows and arrows
Any information about bows and arrows from that part of the world would be much appreciated! In any language. Easy to find photos online but hard to find anything from a collectors or researchers perspective. Zonneveld does not include much IIRC. The bow with the metal bands and hair ornamentation is wild.
