The leather looks good, while the crafts is a bit rough.
Here is a leather hemlet I picked up. |

@eftihis: The helmet on ebay is a kind of Cabasset helmet, very popular dissign in Europe during mid of 15th century till 16th century, used by solders and guards. Unusual is the material, they were mainly iron (or only the iron ones survived) Extremely rare item.
@athena: Very nice piece, but is it realy a helmet, or rather a cask cover of some kind? |

I do not think this is any older than the late 19th century, and is one of these. Still a nice thing to have, if a little heavy on the hongo.

I would think that Tim is the closest here.
Athena's helmet looks nice. I would guess it's Yi? |
I have been looking in another book to see if I could find a similar black leather example. Plenty of basket ware examples and pangolin/armadillo skin examples. That does not mean black leather was not used. If you look very hard you can see that the Naga warriors helmet also has the central stitched seam. It certainly has absolutely nothing to do with Cromwells sappers :D :D :D :D :D :D :D.
