yatagan with interesting blade
5 Attachment(s)
And this classic '' medium'' sized yatagan,
sadly with a really damaged horn hilt. ( I hesitate to change it or just fill up the holes with appropriate resin ) Blade seems of really nice quality and the engravings ( a lot ;) !!!! ) are really nice and interesting Any idea about origin and age ? |

silver inlays in think,
maybe a signature ? strange signs / calligraphy ... |
On this one you can clearly see the layers of Turkish ribbon (twistcore) in the blade. It is worth carefully etching to bring the pattern contrast out.

Hello,
Thank you !! i will sand it and etch, Do you think it's too a zeybek yatagan ( with broken hilt ears ? end of 19th century ? |
I think it is from Asia Minor, though I suspect the ears were relatively small as opposed to the large T-shaped hilts usually associated with zeybeks.

Saracen is correct, the names of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus and their dog (worn and with mistakes). In the roundel at the beginning of the decoration is the name “Mahmud”, presumably the maker

Hello,
Really a BIG Thank you Saracen and Kwiatek for your precious help about translation and informations about the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus !!!!! Sorry for being late to answer, I was on holiday with no e-connection ( maybe like asleep ! ;) I read that in islamic culture the name of the sleepers and their dog were written on items as a protection against evil eye. Interesting to learn that the legend was/is known in Europa , north Africa and Asia in Christian and Islamic culture. an nice accordance, fortunately not the only one but precious to remember in these sensitive times ! Kind regards |
