Horn material in Rencong
4 Attachment(s)
Stimulated by Ibrahiim al Balooshi's recent post regarding identification of rhino horn in khanjar hilts, I was reminded of the translucent nature of the hilt in a recently acquired rencong. I took several photos - apologies for single-handed cell phone pics - using a bright flashlight to illuminate the innards of the horn.
I lack the expertise to determine the origin of the horn. Comment encouraged. |
My guess it is buffalo, cow or some other ruminant.
Rhino is a conglomerate of hair, not layers like buffalo. |
Agree complete with Ariel, buffalo or cow horn, think it's the first one.

Thank you for your observations, gentlemen.

Albino water buffalo horn has been a common choice for these rencong.
