Here are some images of my new tombok. Would be interested in people's comments re age. The blade is in nice condition. The lustre in the wood is very good as well.
thanks

Just a bump to see if anyone has any thoughts on age in this piece.

Hi DrDavid

The scabbard looks recent and I don't think the blade is more than 50yrs old.

I agree with Lew. A rather recent tombak. Nevertheless a very fine example.

Hi Henk and Lew
I realise the dress is new but I am curious to know why you think it of recent origin. I suspect the photos may not do the piece justice.

DrD,

The surface of the blade and the edges are to smooth for an old tombak. Just like keris the blades of tombak where etched with lime juice and warangan. When you have an old tombakblade you would have noticed that the surface and the edges had the same corosionprocess as an old kerisblade because of the arsic.

You do notice the lack of pamor on the metuk ?
This would signify to me that it is a separate piece from the spear blade . :)

Please pardon my manipulation of your picture . DrD

Isn't this a Mataram era piece David ?

drdavid 6th April 2006 06:29 AM

Hi Rick
I do believe this is Mataram, with the potential of being even earlier. The age of the piece is probably best appreciated with it in hand, and the state of preservation is excellent. The dress is recent but appropriate to the piece.

It is really beautiful and has been well maintained .
The pamor control from what I can see is outstanding .
