Dagger for ID

Good Morning all,
I have recently picked up a small dagger, overall length in scabbard is 13 inches. The seller had an idea that it was of European origin, but did not really know, and neither do I. I shall be very grateful of someone can ID it. Many thanks in anticipation of your expert assistance. Best, Brian |

Mid-19th century, continental European, possibly French. These types were popular throughout Europe and in N America. Depending on how plain or decorated, how long or short and where found, I've heard them referred to as gambler's dirks, boot daggers, etc. Daggers of this type were used by 'soiled doves' in the brothels of the Old West, by gamblers as small concealed weapons, etc. Yours is very decorated, but NOT just a show-piece judging from the no-nonsense blade. I used to have a German-made bowie with very similar decorations to the hilt and sheath, but a single edged bowie blade. Nice piece...
