Riau/Jambi. The proportions of base of blade of this keris are similar, and pendokok (of the same kind) was some longer time together with this blade and hilt.

The hilt is exceptionally nice of course, one could see a Kakatua's head in the scrollwork perhaps.

Sorry Detlef, but the threads you linked to don't show hilts that look like this one to me. That doesn't discount Jambi, but this hilt is a distinctly different style to my eyes... :shrug:

I have to agree with David. It is a Bugis keris in all ways. The carving on the hilt I would call extraordinary and well executed. Never seen something like this and probably made after the wishes of the former owner.

Here all hilts side by side. Before I write an answer I want to see them byself side by side.

Ok, after viewing them all four side by side I have to say that the hilt in question isn't so much "erected" like the three others but when I have to give an opinion about it's origin I still would guess Jambi but I don't want to put my hand in fire for my guess! ;) :D

At last only the carver could give a certain answer if it is Jambi in origin but I doubt that we can ask him. :D :rolleyes:

I just have had a look to the krisdisc fro Jensen chapter 9,3 pages 25-29, special the hilt shown on page 27 let me lean towards my first guess that this hilt is most probable from Jambi.

I think it is very difficult to specifically ID this keris as coming from Jambi. At best we can say Melaka Straits region...more likely to the south...perhaps Jambi, perhaps Siak or Riau...perhaps even Palembang. Too little is known yet to be more specific than that.

But I can be specific about one thing...it is an extraordinary keris! I'm jealous...congrats!!

Thanks, Dave! I agree that this hilt isn't close enough to the hilt style attributed to Jambi to nail down its exact origin - the straits area does seem like a safer estimate.

Thanks, David. It was love on first sight and Freddy was kind enough to pass this keris on to me.

The major difference between the two hilts is their size: Noramin's example is a full-size version while mine is diminutive - this probably also accounts for some of the stylistic differences while the general flow of lines does seem to be pretty close. A detailed side by side comparison would be nice - I certainly would be glad to provide some family reunion shots... ;)
